An arrest has been made after an intruder broke into Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass' home on Sunday (April 21).
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, an intruder broke into the Getty House, which is the official residence of the Los Angeles mayor, through a glass door at around 6:40 a.m., per NBC Los Angeles.
Bass was in the residence at the time of the intrusion but wasn't injured.
“Mayor Bass and her family were not injured and are safe,” Deputy Mayor of Communications Zach Seidl said in a statement. "The Mayor is grateful to LAPD for responding and arresting the suspect.”
Police said officers responded to the home after an alarm went off. First responders encountered the intruder as they entered the home, according to police.
29-year-old Ephrain Matthew Hunter was booked on suspicion of burglary, police said. Hunter is being held on a $100,000 bail.
Hunter was previously sentenced to 5 to 7 years in prison in connection to an assault case in March 2015 in Massachussetts. He pleaded not guilty but was later convicted of attempted murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping, possession of a class A drug (heroin), and armed robbery.
A hammer and snow brush were used as weapons in the assault, prosecutors said.
"So right now, that's part of an ongoing investigation that's being conducted by Robbery-Homicide Division," LAPD Lt. James Mylonakis said in a statement. "So we're just inside, we're taking photographs, collecting any physical evidence.
"As an Angeleno, I'm very concerned, obviously. It's just the mayor of the city and we're concerned for any resident that has somebody just come into their home. So, we treat this very seriously," Mylonakis added.
