A white woman in Ohio has issued a tearful apology after she was called out for profiling her Black neighbor.
Real estate developer Mike Jenkins shared home security footage of his encounter with his white neighbor, Michelle Bishop, who falsely accused him of chasing her in a vehicle and later trespassing on his own property.
Bishop reportedly fled to the nearest home in an affluent Ohio neighborhood after a vehicle slowly approached her and her children while they were jogging outside. Jenkins answered the door and identified himself as the homeowner, but Bishop didn't believe the home belonged to the Black man.
"I don't believe that," Bishop said before leaving Jenkins' property with her children and screaming for help.
Bishop's husband then appeared to go to Jenkins' house to explain the situation with his wife. Bishop claimed Jenkins "scared the crap" of her for simply identifying himself as the homeowner. Jenkins said he was driving slowly through the neighborhood while looking at Christmas lights as Bishop explained she thought he was following her.
"Well you just have to understand my point of view," Bishop said as she tried to justify her apparent discrimination.
Video of the incident shared on X, formerly Twitter, garnered over 47 million views and 135,000 likes. Social media users called out Bishop for assuming the home didn't belong to Jenkins in an apparent act of profiling and discrimination.
After receiving widespread backlash over the incident, Bishop released several videos apologizing for what happened. Bishop denied any racist intent in her actions, saying she was only concerned about her children's safety. She also claimed that she wasn't able to see Jenkins' race because it was dark outside.
