A 114-year-old woman from Pennsylvania has become the oldest known living person in America.
Naomi Whitehead turned 114 while surrounded by friends and family on September 28, according to LongeviQuest, an organization that tracks the oldest people in the world.
Whitehead recently became the oldest living person in the U.S. after Elizabeth Francis, a 115-year-old Texas woman, died on Tuesday (October 22).
"We are saddened to report the passing of Ms. Elizabeth Francis," LongeviQuest reported. "Ms. Elizabeth was a Houstonian icon and a cherished member of the community."
Whitehead was born on a Georgia farm on Sept. 26, 1910.
As a child, Whitehead would help her family pick cotton and tobacco. Washington said the farm had horses, which she remembers being afraid of them kicking her.
Whitehead married her husband, Sylvester Whitehead, in 1930. The couple had three children, Parrish L., who died in 2011, Elbert, and Sylvester. Whitehead's husband died in the 1980s.
According to LongeviQuest, Whitehead is the seventh-oldest living person in the world.
