Federal agents searched Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C., home Monday (October 12) as part of an ongoing criminal investigation, NBC News reported.

A Department of Justice spokesperson confirmed that Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant, describing it as “part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation.”

The DOJ did not identify Omar in its statement or explain what investigators were seeking.

The search comes 22 days before the November 3 midterm elections, in which Omar is seeking re-election to represent Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.

NBC News reported that DOJ policy prohibits prosecutors and agents from timing investigative actions or public statements to influence an election, though there is no blanket ban on investigations during the 60 days before an election.

Last month, border czar Tom Homan told Fox News that DHS was investigating Omar. “If someone committed immigration violation, if someone committed marriage fraud or anything like that, regardless if they’re a congressman or not, no one’s above the law,” Homan said.

Homan did not provide evidence that Omar had committed either offense.

In a Thursday (October 8) Truth Social post, President Donald Trump claimed Minnesota was “being taken over by Somali Immigrants” and urged residents to “fight back.”

Trump had also targeted Omar in a January 26 post, claiming she left Somalia with nothing and was “reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars.”

He wrote that the DOJ and Congress were “looking at” the congresswoman. The post does not establish whether that inquiry was connected to Monday’s search.

Omar fled Somalia’s civil war at age 8, spent four years in a Kenyan refugee camp and then immigrated to the United States, according to her official website. She was first elected to Congress in 2018.

Reuters reported that Fox News Digital, citing unnamed sources, linked the investigation to immigration paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child.

The DOJ has not confirmed that account or announced charges against Omar.
